
Annual Science Fair Winners Announced
Two Special Awards were presented by
MRWPCA at the Monterey County Science Fair on March 9. The MRWPCA
awards are intended to support science development and projects that
highlight seawater intrusion and pollution prevention issues. Recipients
of the awards were:
Junior Division
Alexis Olmo and Sasha Polovneff (pictured at top), International
School of Monterey, 7th Grade. “How Does the Level of Salinity
With Which a Plant Is Watered Affect a Plant’s Growth?” (This
project also received 1st place in its category by the Science Fair
judges.)
Senior Division
Kelly Allyn (right), Salinas High School, Sophomore. “Ant Control:
Are Organic Pesticides as Effective as Synthetic Pesticides?” (This
project also received 3rd place in its category by the Science Fair
judges.)
Kelly’s
project highlights the effectiveness of simple products such as vinegar for
pest control. Less hazardous, non-toxic products protect our treatment works
and the environment.
These winners also were recognized at the April 28 Agency Board
meeting.
