Agency Recognizes Science Fair Achievements
Two Special Awards were presented by
the Agency at the Monterey County Science Fair on March 29, 2009.
The MRWPCA awards are intended to support science development and
projects that highlight seawater intrusion and pollution prevention.
The Agency
Board also honored the recipients at its April meeting.
Junior Division
Lauren
Johnson (above right), Santa Catalina Lower School, 8th Grade, for "Holding
Back the Tide - Sassy Strawberry Salinity." This
project highlights the effects of seawater intrusion on agricultural
crops, particularly strawberries, which are a high value crop in
Monterey County.
Senior Division
Claire-Virginia Westerkamp (right) and Krista
Brockman, York School, 9th Grade, for "A Water Pollution Solution." This
project evaluated the effects of common urban runoff pollutants such
as motor oil, garden pesticides, and car cleaners on marine algae.
Claire's project also received 2nd Place honors in the Plant
Biology category by the Science Fair judges.
