Biosolids Dewatering Replacement Project (Phase I)
Sludge dewatering was previously accomplished through the use of two storage lagoons, 40 drying beds, and a temporary belt filter press. Screw press dewatering of wastewater solids is a new and innovative technology that has been used mainly in the pulp/paper and food processing industries. The screw presses were pre-purchased from the FKC Corporation (Port Angeles, WA) and installed by Gantry Constructors Inc. (Clarksdale, AZ) through a $3.6 million construction contract. This new facility has now been completed and can produce up to 20 dry tons of biosolids “cake” per day. The two screw presses installed are the largest in North America for wastewater dewatering. The Facility is designed to accommodate a third screw press and the screw presses can be modified to produce Class A biosolids. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |

Salinas Pump Station Pump Replacement
The Salinas Pump Station conveys wastewater approximatley seven miles from the City of Salinas to the Regional Treatment Facility near Marina. Future flow projections for the City along with the need to replace outdated equipment prompted the replacement of eight new 500 horsepower (hp) motors and drives in 2003. Monterey Peninsula Engineering is currently installing eight new 500 hp pumps. Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of July. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |

RTP Chemical Tank Project
Chemicals are added to the incoming wastewater stream at the Regional Treatment Plant to enhance the removal of solids during primary treatment. These chemicals are currently being added by means of a temporary feed system. A permanent chemical feed system will be constructed as part of this project. This project will involve the installation of chemical tanks, construction of concrete containment areas, and mechanical and electrical work. This project is expected to bid in late May. Coral Pump Station Generator Project
The Coral Street Pump Station is one of two major pumps stations conveying wastewater from the City of Pacific Grove. The generator in the pump station has become outdated and does not meet current emissions standards. Due to damage from winter storms, the project scope is being re-evaluated, but will include installation of a new generator, in addition to removal of an existing underground diesel fuel storage tank. The generator is currently on order and the installation and remediation contracts are anticipated to bid in August. Contact Garrett Haertel at (831)883-6176 for more information. |

Facility Coating Management Project (Year 2)
Due to the harsh environment associated with wastewater facilities, coupled with our close proximity to the ocean, coating maintenance has been a significant and on-going challenge. Techno Coatings, Inc. (Anaheim, CA) was retained to perform work associated with the second year of the ten year coating management project for a contract amount of about $450,000. This work was completed at the end of February. Year 3 of this project will begin in August. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |

Cogeneration Facility Replacement Project
As part of our treatment process, methane gas is generated from our anaerobic digesters, which in turn is used to generate electricity in our cogeneration facility. Since the engines and generators are now over 20 years old, it was time to consider our power generating options for the future. A recent study was performed that concluded that there are several power generating options that are viable including refurbishing our existing facility, utilizing zero emission technology such as fuel cell and solar, and possibly joining forces with the neighboring solid waste facility (MRWMD) and utilizing methane gas produced by both entities. Further investigation is required to determine how and in what timeframe MRWPCA will be pursuing these options. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |

Thickener Pump Installation Project
A number of piston pumps are currently being used to pump sludge at the Regional Treatment Facility. Moyno progressing cavity pumps have been pre-purchased to replace 7 pumps. Installation will include demolition of existing pumps and concrete bases, placement of new concrete bases, mechanical piping, instrumentation and electrical work. This project is expected to bid in June. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |

Ocean Outfall Inspection and Maintenance
The ocean outfall carries treated wastewater from our Regional Wastewater Plant approximately two miles into the Monterey Bay. Since our reclamation facility is operating during the months of February through October, flow through the outfall occurs for only a few months each year. The last 1400 feet of the outfall is where this flow is safely diffused into the ocean. Periodically, the diffuser end of the outfall is inspected and cleaned by divers. Proposals have been received for this project and the contract is anticipated to be awarded in July. Contact Jennifer Gonzalez at (831)883-6172 for more information. |
